Tools Needed For Beekeeping

In order to have a healthy hive, beekeepers need the proper beekeeping equipment. Certainly, the beehive should be prepared before introducing the bees to it. However, it is not enough to just make beehives; there are many other important aspects to beekeeping.

To begin with, the hive should have a spot where the bees can store their honey. The hive should have what they call supers. These should be in between the top and the bottom of the hive. If beekeepers neglect to put these supers, there would be no place where bees could raise their offspring. The hive can be shallow or deep as long as each super has nine to ten frames.

The hive should be set up in a remote place so the bees will not be disturbed. It should be on a flat surface so it will not get accidentally knocked over. Care should be taken so that pets will not be able to get near the hive.

Another tool that people might encounter in beekeeping is the spacer. This is utilized in order to keep the space equal for the bees. In addition to that, a smoker is very important as well. This is used so as the bees will leave their hive while you are getting the honey out. A smoker is simple piece of equipment which consists of a bellow, combustion chamber and funnel.

Many beekeepers believe that clean and old burlap is the most convenient material to use with a smoker. They say that it is easy to ignite helping them finish the job in no time. Yet others prefer using dried corn cobs.

A metal hive tool is useful as well. It is an all purpose tool for beekeeping used whenever the frame needs cleaning and scraping. Also, it can pry open the hive as well.

Furthermore, a bee brush enables the beekeeper to examine the frames by gently keeping the bees out of the way. While harvesting the honey, a fumer board is used which is capable of removing chemicals and allows the beekeeper to take the honeycombs.

You can see that there are many useful tools used in beekeeping. There is no need to be overwhelmed because most of them are inexpensive. Plus you can often find good deals when you shop for beekeeping supplies online. If you are uncertain of what tools you should invest in, you may want to talk with a local beekeeper for advice. You will probably be able to get all the information you need from the company that sells you your starter bees. Some of the tools are designed for making your job easier and more efficient. Others, like the smoker are essential for your safety.
